With the same brilliant combination of humor and warmth she brought to bestseller Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott gives us a smart, funny, and comforting chronicle of single motherhood. It’s not like she’s the only woman to ever have a baby. At thirty-five. On her own. But Anne Lamott makes it all fresh in her now-classic account of how she and her son and numerous friends and neighbors and some strangers survived and thrived in that all important first year. From finding out that her baby is a boy (and getting used to the idea) to finding out that her best friend and greatest supporter Pam will die of cancer (and not getting used to that idea), with a generous amount of wit and faith (but very little piousness), Lamott narrates the great and small events that make up a woman’s life. "Lamott has a conversational style that perfectly conveys her friendly, self-depricating humor." -- Los Angeles Times Book Review "Lamott is a wonderfully lithe writer .... Anyone who has ever had a hard time facing a perfectly ordinary day will identify." -- Chicago Tribune

Archiving corn strains to guard against genetic pollution … Coating chainsaw blades with mushroom spores to speed forest regeneration … Growing crops that literally suck heavy metals out of damaged soil ... These are not utopian fantasies but proven strategies developed by experts who have discovered how to exploit the innate intelligence of living systems to create “true biotechnologies.” The Bioneers (“biological pioneers”) are a network of scientists, writers, economists, artists, and other leaders with practical and visionary solutions for our most pressing environmental and social challenges. Their annual conference draws global attention, and its most inspiring presentations become source material for books in the Bioneers series. In this volume, Bioneers founder Kenny Ausubel gathers reports from leaders in the fields of biomimicry (mimicking nature to restore environments and transform production processes), “living technologies” that break down toxics biologically; and ecologically sound design for buildings and industries. These are set alongside essays by such writers as Paul Hawken, Terry Tempest Williams, and Michael Pollan that underscore the need to work in harmony with natural systems. Unlike corporatized genetic manipulation, the “true biotechnologies” explored here illuminate a future of hope by wedding human ingenuity to the wisdom of the wild.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is known in NATO circles as the ¿Fishbed¿. Designed as a Mach 2.0 interceptor, the plane holds the distinction of being produced in greater numbers than any other jet aircraft. The Fishbed flew in combat in Vietnam, where it held its own against the F-105 Thunderchief. During the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, 17 Israeli aircraft were shot down, for a loss of six Egyptian MiG-21s. The plane also flew in combat in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and in Yugoslavia. Today, over 28 of the world¿s air forces continue to fly MiG-21s. Originally printed by NATO, this English-language handbook provides a glimpse inside the cockpit of this incredible plane. The manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. One of the most legendary naval aircraft of WWII, the Grumman TBF Avenger (and the General Motors-produced TBM) saw action in most of the major battles in the Pacific including Midway and Leyte Gulf. Armed with a forward machine gun and a second in a dorsal turret, the plane could carry a 21-inch torpedo or four 500-lb. bombs, or a combination thereof. Avengers are credited with sinking the Japanese superbattleships Musashi and Yamato. A young aviator who would later become President, George H.W. Bush flew a TBF off the carrier USS San Jacinto in 1943-44. Originally printed by Grumman, G.M. and the U.S. Navy late in the war, this TBM-3 Flight Operating Handbook taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified "Restricted," the manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted and color images appear in black and white.
